Lion Dance 101
Chapter 16 of 20

Lion dance on campus

校園舞獅

College and university teams in the United States and Asia: how they start, who teaches them and where they compete.

Why lion dance thrives on campus

A college team gets what Chinatown associations and martial arts schools once supplied: a steady stream of new members, a rehearsal room, a small budget and a ready audience at Lunar New Year. The United States Dragon and Lion Dance Federation (USDLDF) says the art has been practised in the US "for over a century" in "Chinatown associations, traditional martial arts schools and college campuses".1 This chapter covers the third group, in the US and in Asia, then what a coach can borrow, and closes with a check of Massachusetts campuses.

Three patterns repeat across the sources.

  • Nobody needs experience. A Penn Lions page says about one new member per class has danced before, and that upperclassmen teach the rest by word of mouth.2
  • The group is the draw. A Penn member says people come for the lion dancing and stay for the community.2
  • Outside teachers help when found. Examples below: an alumnus coach in Singapore, a sports university in Taiwan.

Asian campuses are organised differently. In Malaysia and Singapore a lion team usually sits inside a wushu club (武術 / 武术, Cant. mou5 seot6, Mand. wǔshù, "martial arts") or a cultural activities club. In mainland China and Taiwan it often sits inside a sports department and competes in a national student championship.

US college teams

The table lists teams with real evidence. One style name recurs: Hok San (鶴山 / 鹤山, Cant. hok6 saan1, Mand. Hèshān, the Heshan lion). Chapter 5 explains the Hok San head and its principles. "Not found" means the pages reached did not say.

The page carries a 2022 copyright line and no recent dates.49
Washington University in St. Louis, WashU Lion DanceEarly 2010sNo single school of thought namedSt. Louis Public Radio (9 February 2024) says routines are passed down by student choreographers who take over the group, and that it performs at events hosted by Asian student organisations. It gives no size or outside teacher.50

Schools with no team found. Searches found no lion dance team at Harvard, Princeton, Smith, Tufts, UMass Boston, the University of Houston, Georgia Tech or the University of Washington, and only a community team in Michigan.51 That does not prove none exists; many clubs leave no web page. One Michigan lead is unresolved: a Michigan Lion Dance website (archived, with a 2025 copyright line and a pointer to a newer site) lists a team page and past events, but the pages this guide could open do not say whether it is a University of Michigan group.52 UMass Amherst is covered under Massachusetts campuses, since it does have a Lion Dragon Club. Near misses: Boston University's kung fu club organised a New England Intercollegiate Kung Fu Showcase at the BU Dance Theater on 23 April 2016, with lion dance on the programme and Wellesley's wushu club taking part;53 at the University of Illinois the lion dance at a Lunar New Year festival came from the Vietnamese Student Association.54 Kansas, Purdue, Arizona and Baruch College appear only as listings.55 A WashU troupe from the early 2010s is said to rely mostly on routines passed down by student choreographers.50

MIT

The current MIT Lion Dance Team site says the group has been performing since 1994 and was recognised as an official MIT club in 1997. Its stated aim is to introduce lion dance and "spread fortune" around Greater Boston. The page does not name a style, lineage or teacher.3

An older, undated version of the site (written after 2004, since it says "over 10 years now") fills in more. The team dances the southern lion, usually two or three lions, mostly choreographed. Its kung fu base is Hung Gar (洪家, Cant. hung4 gaa1, Mand. Hóngjiā) with mostly three-star and some seven-star beats. The site credits the style to Hung Hei-gun (洪熙官, Cant. hung4 hei1 gun1, Mand. Hóng Xīguān). Performances cluster around Chinese New Year, and the page says the team especially enjoys performing for children.4

Two other facts about MIT. On 14 March 2003 it was one of five New England teams (MIT, Brandeis, Brown, Columbia, Boston College) in an "Intercollegiate Lion Dance Showcase" in Waltham, Massachusetts, and 13 members went.12 A January 2004 MIT Independent Activities Period listing, sponsored by the Chinese Students Club, offered eight one-hour morning sessions of lion dance with no previous experience required.56

Asia

The evidence is thinner than for the US and tilts toward events rather than teams. Chapter 12 covers the national scenes; this section is only about universities.

Malaysia: University of Malaya

University of Malaya (馬來亞大學 / 马来亚大学, Cant. maa5 loi4 aa3 daai6 hok6, Mand. Mǎláiyà Dàxué; "UM", 馬大 / 马大) has a record that is about teaching, not trophies. A People's Daily column of 19 April 2025 says the 馬大醒獅團 / 马大醒狮团 (Cant. maa5 daai6 sing2 si1 tyun4, Mand. Mǎdà Xǐngshī Tuán) was founded in 2007 and in nearly 20 years has grown from a student society into a body that teaches lion dance and Chinese culture to the public. It reports about 500 members nationwide, 430 of them primary school pupils, training on the plaza in front of the student activity centre.57 The university supplies the place and the name; the pupils are mostly children, so for children's classes this is the closest Asian parallel here. The column is diplomacy-themed and the figures come from one self-reporting source.

In September 2026 The Star reported a three-day show on Nanyang (South-East Asian) heritage in Penang, staged by the Universiti Malaya Lion Dance Troupe (UMLD) and Shi Yuan Cultural Association Malaysia, with about 600 performers and more than 30 local schools involved. It gives no founding date, size or trainer for UMLD.58 The troupe's public Instagram account, @umliondance8, is named 馬大醒獅團 / 马大醒狮团 UM Lion Dance Troupe and carries the Penang show that The Star reported, which ties UMLD to the troupe the People's Daily describes; on 9 October 2026 it showed 616 posts and 2,510 followers.59 Its highlights and pinned posts name an annual large show titled 獅源之南洋舞 / 狮源之南洋舞 (Mand. Shīyuán zhī Nányáng Wǔ, "Lion Origin: Nanyang Dance"), with editions in Seremban in 2025 and Penang in 2026.59 A recap dated 16 September 2026 calls the Penang run two days and three shows, against the three-day show described in The Star, and lists lion dance, the 24 festive drums (二十四節令鼓 / 二十四节令鼓, Mand. Èrshísì Jiélìng Gǔ), dragon dance, high-pole lion dance and martial arts.60 A recruitment post from early October 2026 invites new members for 2026/2027, says no experience is needed and promotes a roadshow at UM Central on 5 and 6 October.61

Malaysia: UTAR

Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR; 拉曼大學 / 拉曼大学, Cant. laai1 maan6 daai6 hok6, Mand. Lāmàn Dàxué) keeps lion dance inside its Wushu Club at the Kampar campus in Perak, which has a Lion and Dragon Dance Division. That division ran the 2019 UTAR Perak Open Traditional Lion Dance Championship (10 teams from Perak), and the club organised the first UTAR Lion Dance Championship in April 2024 (20 teams from across Malaysia; the 2024 page failed to load, so that detail is from a search summary).63 A January 2010 Ministry of Higher Education grant of RM7,000 covered campus cultural activities including a set of lion dance equipment.64 A Kampar team took bronze at the 2026 TAR UMT Cup invitational.65 The first UTAR Lion Dance Championship was held on 13 April 2024 at Dewan Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik on the Kampar campus, organised by the Kampar Campus Wushu Club, with 20 teams from across Malaysia including two UTAR troupes, the UTAR Wushu Lion and Dragon Dance Troupe and the UTAR Sungai Long Wushu Lion Dragon Troupe.66 The top three places went to outside clubs: a Penang sports and culture association took the title and RM3,000, Malaysia Ming Kok Dragon and Lion Dance Team was first runner-up and a Butterworth association was second runner-up.66

None of those pages describes drum lessons. Chapter 5 lists a numbered YouTube series titled "UTAR Kampar Lion Dance Drum Training", for example UTAR 1 三礼 @ 0:00 and UTAR 3 密点 疏点 @ 0:00.67 The sources do not tie that uploader to the Wushu Club, so the link between the series and the club is unconfirmed. Ask the club.

Malaysia: other universities

Multimedia University (MMU) in Cyberjaya won the university category, and was runner-up in the open category, at the first APU Cup traditional lion dance competition in Klang on 22 December 2024, and won the university category at the TAR UMT Cup on 18 January 2026.68 MMU's entry came from its Chinese Language Society at the Cyberjaya campus, with twelve members. The APU Cup was held at Fairy Park Heritage City in Klang; its university category, open to students of local and private universities, had five teams, and its open category, which also admitted associations, companies and independent experts, had 17.69 Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has a Kung Fu Club, founded in 1976, with a Dragon and Lion Dance division among five; it held its 46th Kung Fu Night on 10 May 2026.70 Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) held a lion dance competition at its Panggung Seni with seven teams registered (2017, per a search summary).71 The private Taylor's College lists a lion dance club.72

Singapore

At the National University of Singapore (NUS) the lion troupe is a student group that moved under the university's Cultural Activities Club. An alumnus who now works at NUS still mentors and coaches current students, and a 2023 NUS story described falling recruitment (search summaries; one NUS page did not load).73 At Nanyang Technological University (NTU), the Cultural Activities Club's dragon and lion dance troupe runs the NTU Institutional Lion Dance Competition. The 15th edition was in 2019, a secondary school's website reports on the 2023 edition, and that edition carried an anti-drug message with the National Council Against Drug Abuse.74 One summary says it has run since 2000, but a 15th edition in 2019 implies about 2005 if annual; the sources do not settle which. The 2023 NCADA project page names the organiser as the Nanyang Technological University Cultural Activities Club, Dragon and Lion Dance Troupe (NTU CAC DLD) and says the contest has been an annual staple of the troupe since 2000.75 That matches the earlier summary, but a 15th edition in 2019 still does not fit an annual count from 2000, and the page gives no troupe founding year, team count, event date or 2023 result. Singapore Polytechnic's Dragon and Lion Dance Club dates from 1993 (a polytechnic, not a university).76 For the national federation and its Genting wins, see Chapter 12 and Chapter 15.

Hong Kong and Macau

Three searches found no dedicated lion dance club at HKU, CUHK, PolyU or HKUST (HKUST's student dance society is general dance), and no intervarsity lion dance event, though absence is not proof. What does exist: Lingnan University's cultural teams include a student lion team (醒獅隊 / 醒狮队, Cant. sing2 si1 deoi2, Mand. xǐngshī duì) that recruits each academic year and trains regularly.77 The university's cultural-teams page lists a Lion Dance Team under its English name only.77 It says new members are selected from students at the start of each academic year and that regular training is provided, and it mentions activities at the university and in the Tuen Mun District. It gives no founding year, coach, training schedule or dated competition result. CUHK's 50th anniversary kick-off in 2013 had a dragon and nine lions standing for its nine colleges, played by a mixed group of students (a one-off).78 PolyU let about 560 students try lion dancing on 4 March 2026, and a team called 唐氏會醒獅隊 performed at another PolyU event, though the source does not say whether it is a student team.79 In Macau, the University of Macau lists a Dragon and Lion Dance Team under its sports office (titles seen in search results only).80 A recruitment notice of 19 August 2025 on the university's e-bulletin gives the team's Chinese name as 澳門大學龍獅隊 (Cant. ou3 mun4 daai6 hok6 lung4 si1 deoi2, Mand. Àomén Dàxué Lóngshī Duì). It says the team began in March 2019 as a dragon dance team, added lion dance to regular training and took its present name in August 2022, draws students from Macau, Hong Kong, the mainland and overseas, and trains twice a week with professional coaches; applicants fill in an online form and attend a tryout, the 2025 deadline was 1 September, and the page lists performances at the university's open day and sports ceremonies but no competition results.81

Taiwan

Taiwan's national Holy Mother Cup (聖母盃 / 圣母杯, Mand. Shèngmǔ Bēi) has a college social group (大專社會組 / 大专社会组, Mand. dàzhuān shèhuì zǔ). A team of Lunghwa University of Science and Technology students, years one to four from a tourism and leisure department, won the 2023 college social group southern lion single-lion event and the dragon dance event.82 A 2026 edition was open for entries: its registration form, with a deadline of 8 October 2026, lists a college and social group beside primary, junior high and senior high or vocational groups, with 醒獅 (Mand. xǐngshī, "awakening lion"), 台灣獅 (Mand. Táiwān shī, "Taiwan lion") and dragon dance events, and with single-lion, two-lion, multi-head lion, traditional and high-pole categories.83 National Taiwan University of Sport (國立臺灣體育大學, Mand. Guólì Táiwān Tǐyù Dàxué) added dragon and lion dance to its martial arts specialty courses in the summer of 2004 and engaged a teacher for it; its team placed at the 1st Asian Dragon and Lion Championships in April 2007 (all-round dragon runner-up, northern lion champion).84

The University of Taipei appears at Genting: Chinese Taipei's third place in 2016 (9.17) is credited to it, and it won a merit award in 2025 (9.27).85 One of its teachers, Dr Yu-Hsiang Nien, is on the USDLDF's rules advisers and taught its 2022 judge course in Madison, Wisconsin.86 The searches found no National Taiwan University or National Taiwan Normal University lion teams in national college contests. National Taiwan University does list a student club, the NTU Lion Dance Association, whose profile calls it a team that loves lion dance performance and welcomes members with or without performance experience; the page gives no founding year, member count or results.87 The physical education department of the National University of Tainan runs a folk team (體育系民俗隊, Mand. tǐyù xì mínsú duì), formed in 1992, that practises dragon dance, the golden lion formation (金獅陣, Mand. Jīnshī Zhèn), drum formations, lion dance, diabolo and martial arts.88 A March 2025 report says its staff and students visited Australia on 4 to 15 February 2025, with Ministry of Education sports funding, to meet the Australian Chinese Youth Federation's dragon and lion troupe and sign a cooperation memorandum.88

Mainland China

The national student contest is the 全國大學生舞龍舞獅錦標賽 / 全国大学生舞龙舞狮锦标赛 (Mand. Quánguó Dàxuéshēng Wǔlóng Wǔshī Jǐnbiāosài, Cant. cyun4 gwok3 daai6 hok6 saang1 mou5 lung4 mou5 si1 gam2 biu1 coi3), whose lion events carry edition numbers. The 17th opened on 16 July 2025 at Hunan First Normal University. The China Student Sports Federation (中國學生體育聯合會 / 中国学生体育联合会, Mand. Zhōngguó Xuéshēng Tǐyù Liánhéhuì) organised it and its University Dragon and Lion Dance Branch ran it, with 58 universities, 658 athletes and 18 provinces and regions. There were three event types (traditional, optional, compulsory) for southern and northern lions, in 13 groups.89 The 16th, in Yongfu County, Guangxi, ended on 29 July 2024 with 43 universities and over 600 athletes (search summary).90 The pages reached do not say when the series began; if it runs once a year the first edition would be about 2009, but that is arithmetic, not a source. The 15th edition (2023) appears in a team report: the lion and dragon team of UIC (Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University), whose English news page dates the contest to 23 August 2023, says it ranked first in five performance items and won team-overall prizes.91 In 2026 the dragon events were reported from Guilin Medical University, ending on 16 July with 51 universities and over 1,000 athletes, and the lion events from Hainan, ending on 25 July with 49 universities from 14 provinces and regions and nearly 1,000 athletes.92,93 The Hainan lion events used Group A (ordinary undergraduate colleges), Group B (higher vocational colleges) and Group C (high-level sports teams), each with southern and northern lion routines.93 In Group A northern lion, Wuhan Technology and Business University (武漢工商學院 / 武汉工商学院, Mand. Wǔhàn Gōngshāng Xuéyuàn) took golds in the compulsory and free routines and silvers in the traditional routine and the team total, with seven athletes, two school teachers and an outside coach from the Hubei dragon and lion association.93 Rules are in Chapter 14.

Below the national level, the seventh Guangzhou youth lion dance performance contest (July 2023) included a joint team of Guangzhou colleges, the 南國醒獅團 / 南国醒狮团 (Mand. Nánguó Xǐngshī Tuán), performing a new piece.94 No standing university lion team in Guangdong was found. The 2025 opening report for the 17th national lion events names no university team, and the 2026 Hainan report names one Group A team, Wuhan Technology and Business University, with no team named in Group B or Group C.89,93 Searches for Guangzhou Sport University (广州体育学院, Mand. Guǎngzhōu Tǐyù Xuéyuàn) and Jinan University (暨南大学, Mand. Jìnán Dàxué) found no lion dance team record. Hubei University's Dragon and Lion Dance Art Troupe won the northern lion optional routine at the first FOBI World Lion and Dragon Dance Championship in Indonesia (17 to 19 May 2024), and took 2 golds, 2 silvers and 4 bronzes at the 17th National Dragon and Lion Dance Championship at Jintan, Jiangsu, in December 2025.95,96 Guangxi University of Foreign Languages won the men's southern lion freestyle and prescribed-routine firsts at the fifth Guangxi Collegiate Dragon and Lion Dance Championships at Baise University (reported 10 January 2024), then three silvers, a bronze and second place in the men's team total at the 16th national contest that July.97,98 Hunan University of Finance and Economics (湖南財政經濟學院 / 湖南财政经济学院, Mand. Húnán Cáizhèng Jīngjì Xuéyuàn) sent 10 men and 5 women to those 2024 lion events, and its women's northern lion team won the free-routine gold at its first national student contest.90

Competitions and showcases

No official site or rule sheet for the East Coast event was found, so its history is stitched together from club pages. The event now has its own public Instagram account, @intercollegiate_liondance, whose bio calls it the official page of Intercollegiate Lion Dance and whose posts run from March 2022 to 2026.99 It carries recaps, programmes and sponsor thanks but no rule sheet or score scale; the only scoring detail on the pages this guide could open is a 2026 Diamondback report that the competition's rubric judges lion essence, storytelling, footwork and sportsmanship.22 In 2026 the prize for first place included hosting the next edition,24 and the hosts line up with the results: Penn placed first in 2023 and hosted in 2024, Cornell was listed first among the 2024 top three and hosted in 2025, and the Terp Lions were listed first in 2025 and hosted in 2026.21,100,101 The editions from 2022 to 2027 are in the table below. For 2013 to 2019 most of what was found is team uploads on YouTube, whose titles and descriptions give hosts, placings and performer credits. Penn Lions' own page lists wins in 2010, 2013 and 2016 and hosting in 2012, 2014 and 2017.7 Its 2010 win fits The Daily Pennsylvanian's report of Penn winning an annual contest at Columbia that April, which would make the 2010 Columbia event this competition.10 A video of Columbia's routine places the 6 April 2013 edition at Brown University,102 and in April 2019 the edition was hosted in Richmond, Virginia, by the Virginia Commonwealth University lion dance team.30,31 The table has one row for the editions found for 2012 to 2019. Starting or coaching a college team

These points come from what the teams above do, and from where the sources show things going wrong.

  1. Choose a style on purpose. Styles differ in head, stance and beat, so pick one and see Chapter 5.
  2. Find one outside teacher. NUS has an alumnus coach;73 National Taiwan University of Sport engaged a teacher.84 With no outside teacher, Northeastern's troupe learned mostly from YouTube videos and from each other, and Algonquin College's team in Ottawa learned from YouTube videos.34,109
  3. Teach the basics before the lion. Penn's director told The Daily Pennsylvanian in February 2024 that a more traditional setting would teach martial arts before a student touches a lion.11
  4. Practise with other teams. Lehigh trains jointly with Penn and calls other clubs more experienced.19
  5. Use a competition as the deadline. Lehigh exhibited at the 2025 East Coast competition before entering in 2026.19 An exhibition slot is a lower-stakes first step.
  6. Plan the hand-over each year. Penn's club usually holds a practice around Homecoming that invites alumni back for input and advice.11 Hand over the equipment list and the outside contacts together.
  7. If you teach children, copy the UM model. A university plaza, a head coach and mostly primary school pupils.57
